Dan Robert Johnson, a man of great courage, wisdom, and humor, was born on the 26th of February in the year of our Lord 1948 in Bay City, Texas to William Oscar Johnson and Bennie Ann Johnson of Sublime, TX. He departed this mortal coil on the 27th of May, 2023 in Coldspring, Texas, after a valiant battle with the dread disease of cancer. As the poet John Donne once wrote, "Death, be not proud," for our dear Dan has left a legacy that shall endure in the hearts and minds of all who knew him.
Dan, the adored husband of the late Lana Johnson, was a loving father to their seven children: Regina Simpson of Wales, England, married to Ashley Simpson; Michelle Wasserman of New Town, Pennsylvania; Judy Wasserman of Austin, Texas; Sonya Wooldridge of Pearland, Texas, married to Teddy Wooldridge; Stephanie Johnson of Pearland, Texas, married to Morris Cheatwood; Dana Johnson of Coldspring, Texas; Cory Johnson of Dayton, Texas, and daughter-in-law Jennifer Johnson. Dan was blessed to know and love 40 Grandchildren and 46 Great Grandkchildren and 4 Great Great Grandkids. He is survived by his sisters Joyce Manly of Lolita, Texas, Maude Arnold and Marie Leist of Yoakum, Texas, and his brothers Alfred Johnson of Goliad, Texas and Lester Johnson of Bandera, Texas. Dan was preceded in death by his beloved parents, three sisters, two brothers, and one cherished grandson.
A true scholar, Dan graduated from Sheridan High School in the year 1966. He then went on to serve his country with honor and distinction as a radio operator in the United States Navy from 1967 to 1971. During his time in the service, Dan was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. Upon his return to civilian life, Dan displayed his many talents as an electrician, carpenter, truck driver, and millwright.
In his leisure time, Dan found great joy in the arts and diversions befitting a man of his character. He was a master of the harmonica, delighting all who heard him play. Dan was also known to regale his friends and family with his mellifluous voice, singing karaoke with great gusto. A lover of sport, he enjoyed the noble pursuits of bowling and hunting, and he found satisfaction in working with leather, crafting beautiful and useful items for those he loved.
Dan shall be remembered for his courage in the face of adversity, his wisdom that guided all who sought his counsel, and his humor that brought mirth and laughter to those around him. As the great poet William Wordsworth wrote, "That though the radiance which was once so bright be now forever taken from my sight. Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendor in the grass, glory in the flower. We will grieve not, rather find strength in what remains behind."
Let us then celebrate the life of Dan Robert Johnson, a man who touched the lives of many and whose memory shall live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. And as we bid him a fond adieu, let us remember the words of the immortal William Shakespeare: "Good night, sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."
