Tommie Smith, a beacon of love and kindness, passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on November 5, 2024, in Lufkin, TX. Born on June 12, 1933, in Timpson, TX, she was a daughter to the late Thomas Henry Howell and Edna Skimoor, and over the course of her life, became a cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to a family that spanned five generations.
Tommie's life was a testament to the power of unconditional love and the warmth of a caring heart. As a devoted housewife, she was the cornerstone of her family, creating a home filled with laughter, support, and treasured memories. Her hands were rarely still, as she was always tending to the needs of her family or lending a helping hand to friends and neighbors.
Her spirit and legacy are carried on by her loving children: Donna Courtney and Kenneth Sand. Tommie's life was further enriched by her daughter Mylinda McNealy, who predeceased her, leaving behind a tapestry of memories. She was a proud grandmother to Donna's children, James Lynn, Melissa Courtney, Tommy Courtney, Harlee Courtney, and Marquithei Courtney, as well as Kenny's children, Mike Sand, Chad Sand, and Craig Sand. Tommie's joy multiplied with the addition of eight stepchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
The family tree continued to flourish with Mylinda's children, Jennifer, Michael, P.J., Michelle, Meagan and the eleven great-grandchildren they brought into the world. Tommie's life was marked by the love she had for her extensive family, including 19 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren, and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
Tommie was the last surviving sibling of her family, preceded in death by her brothers, Billy Kelton Howell and John Robert Howell, and her sister, Vivin Doris Kessanger, as well as the Baby Howell Boy. Her life was also touched by the loss of her daughter-in-law Brenda Sand, son-in-law James Courtney, and her cherished daughter Mylinda McNealy.
Known for her loving and kind nature, Tommie Smith was a matriarch in the truest sense. Her guidance and wisdom were the compass for her family, and her gentle demeanor was a soothing presence to all who knew her.
