Barbara (Barb) Lynn Durham Flournoy, a long-time resident of Lufkin, Texas passed away Friday the 15th of March, 2019 at CHI St. Luke’s Hospital in Lufkin, Texas. She was born in Baraboo, WI on November 29th, 1948. She also lived in Las Cruces, NM; Greenbelt, MD; Champagne, IL and Ames, IA before moving to Lubbock, Texas in the summer of 1959. Barb received her teaching degree from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. While at Texas Tech, she met and married Tom Flournoy in 1970 and they then moved to Lufkin and raised four children. She taught English in the public school system in Lufkin for several years before staying home in order to teach her own children. She was a homeschooling pioneer and was one of the first three mothers to begin homeschooling in Lufkin. She went on to encourage many others to pursue homeschooling. Her passions were her family, healthy eating, reading and writing. She loved babies and was a champion for babies in the pro-life movement. She published a health food cookbook and taught others about health and nutrition. She encouraged each of her children to pursue unique paths in education, tennis, music, art, entrepreneurship, home businesses, and family. She is survived by her children, Nicole (Chris) Ellis of Round Rock, Texas, Joshua (Julie) Flournoy of Laurelville, Ohio, Kristen (Kyle) Hay of Lufkin, Texas and Jordan (Sara) Flournoy of Dallas, Texas. She is also survived by her 28 grandchildren including: Preston, Chandler, Hudson, Adeline and Carter Ellis; Elizabeth, Kate, Emma, William, Douglas, Caroline, Jane, Samantha, Morgan, Christopher, Abigail and Amelia Flournoy; Caleb, Morgan, Scarlett, Anna Claire, Francesca, Adam, Joel, William and Raleigh Hay; and Piper and Emerson Flournoy. Surviving siblings are David (Soni) Durham of Surprise AZ, James (Janet) Durham, Margaret Durham, and Eileen Aiken all of Lubbock. She is preceded in death by her father Ralph Durham (1994), mother Jane Durham (2015), brother John Durham (1986), sister Nancy Stewart (2017) and sister Mary Bowles (2015). A memorial service will be held at Kelty’s First Baptist Church at 5:30 on Thursday the 21st of March. A private burial will take place. Memorial donations can be made to The Pregnancy Help Center in Lufkin.
