Ina Kathleen (Kay) Pickering Shelton, 94, previously of Nacogdoches, Texas passed peacefully
into eternal rest on January 19, 2024.
Born October 4, 1929 in Missouri, she was the daughter of the late E.A. Pickering and Dorothea
Irene Pickering.
She married the love of her life Hebbit Shelton on July 27, 1947 and they were blessed with four
children. They settled in Nacogdoches in 1960 where she lived for 57 years until 2017 when she
moved to Richardson to be close to family.
She was a dedicated member of Fredonia Hill Baptist Church. She worked with her husband in
their business of Shelton’s Field Service. She enjoyed anything involving family and friends.
Having a Downs Syndrome daughter, she was a fierce advocate and worked tirelessly to ensure
that she and others got their deserved opportunities. She enjoyed her time as a Pre-K teachers
aide, volunteering at the Nacogdoches Visitor Bureau, cooking, sewing, crossword puzzles,
playing games, the coffee club with her friends and playing dominos every week.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, daughter Nancy Shelton, sisters Marjorie
Ashurst and Norma McWilliams and brother Everett Pickering.
Kay is survived by her children Shirley Watts (Raymond) of Richardson, TX, Teresa Vara (Manuel)
of Orchard, TX and Jill Cheever (Brian) of Jasper, TX. She had 4 grandchildren, Nicholas Vara,
Lindsay Vara Bundick, Brian David Cheever II and Zachary Cheever and 5 great grandchildren.
A private family graveside memorial service is planned.
