James M. Goins, affectionately known as Jim to his friends and loved ones, passed away on March 20, 2024, in Lufkin, Texas, due to heart failure. Born on December 18, 1945, in Los Angeles, California, Jim's journey through life was marked by dedication, joy, and the love he shared with his family and friends.
Jim was the beloved son of the late Myrtle Briggs of Reedsport, Oregon, and Owen Goins of Backus, West Virginia. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his devoted wife, Paula Goins of Wells; his daughters, Tracy Thomason and her husband Billy of Chester, Brandi Waltz and her husband Chad of Lufkin, and Dawn. Jim also held a special place in his heart for his brother, Gregory Wynn of Portland, Oregon, and his sister, Karen Wetterhaus of Lake Havasu, Arizona.
He was a proud grandfather to Bailey Goins, William Thomason, Whitney Thomason, Margaret Ball, and Loryn Hooks, and a great-grandfather to Dave Ball, Ethan Hooks, Eli Hooks, and Elise Hooks. His role as a grandfather was one of his greatest joys, and his wisdom and laughter will be deeply missed by all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
After graduating from high school in Reedsport, Oregon, Jim dedicated 27 years of service to his country in the Air Force Supply Squadron. His commitment to excellence continued in his civilian life where he worked in shipping and receiving at Story-Wright and later shared his passion for golf while working at Neches Pines golf course.
Jim's interests were a reflection of his vibrant spirit. In his younger years, he was an active baseball player, pitching, playing first base, and even coaching the Men's Fast-Pitch team during his time in the Air Force. His love for sports extended to bowling, where he participated in several leagues throughout his military career and continued to bowl in Nacogdoches until 2020.
An avid golfer, Jim not only enjoyed the sport but also passed on his passion by teaching his grandchildren to play. His love for baseball and football was unwavering, and he was a dedicated fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, and Atlanta Braves.
Those who knew Jim would describe him as selfless, funny, and generous. His selfless nature was evident in every aspect of his life, from his service to his country to the way he cared for his family and friends. His sense of humor brought joy and laughter to those around him, and his generosity knew no bounds. Jim's ability to make those around him feel loved and valued will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Jim's life was a tapestry of service, sportsmanship, and love. His absence will be felt deeply by his family, friends, and all who were touched by his generous spirit. As we bid farewell to James M. Goins, we celebrate the life of a man who was truly one of a kind, and whose memory will continue to inspire and guide us. Jim's story does not end here, for his legacy lives on in the hearts of those he loved.
Rest in peace, Jim. Your journey was well played, and your memory will be forever cherished.
