James Willie Lathan, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2023, in Humble, Texas, just a day shy of his 83rd birthday. Born on July 18, 1940, in Brenham, Texas to parents Terry and Willie Mae Boxley Lathan. James was known for his wisdom, humor, and creativity, qualities that endeared him to all who knew him.
James attended Brenham High School, where he displayed an early aptitude for hands-on work. After graduation, he promptly began work at Metal Kitchen and Fabrication in 1960, marking the start of a lifelong love for craftsmanship. In 1964, he further honed his skills by attending welding school, a decision that would shape his career and personal life in countless ways.
His professional journey led him to the City of Houston, where he served as a driver providing essential services to the community he loved. His work ethic was unparalleled, and he was well respected by his colleagues and the many people he encountered in his daily rounds. James was not just an industrious worker; he was also a man of many interests. An avid hunter enjoyed the tranquility of nature and the thrill of the chase. He also had a passion for collecting knives and guns, an interest that stemmed from his deep respect for craftsmanship and precision. Above all, James loved welding and truck driving, two activities that combined his love for hands-on work with his creative spirit.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Joan Lathan, his twelve children which include Lisa, Kenneth, Michelle, Damen, David, and others, 13 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and a great great grandchild, 10 brothers and sisters. His family was the center of his world, and he was the guiding star in theirs. His love, wisdom, and humor will be remembered and cherished by his family and all who knew him.
As Albert Einstein once said, “The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination” James embodied this sentiment through his creative problem-solving, whether he was working on a complex welding project or entertaining his grandchildren with imaginative stories. His memory will continue to inspire his loved ones to approach life with curiosity, creativity, and a hearty sense of humor.
James Willie Lathan’s life was a testament to the power of hard work, the joy of creativity and the strength of family bonds. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and wisdom that will be cherished by his family and all who were fortunate to know him. His life will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of his loved ones, guiding them as they navigate the journey of life without him.
