  1. Larry McCathran, of Marshall, TX died peacefully in Jefferson, TX on 11/08/2024 at the age of 83. 

  2. He was born in Mooringsport, LA in 1941 to James and Helen McCathran. Larry grew up in Mooringsport, LA and graduated from North Caddo High School. He went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Louisiana Tech University and later received his master’s degree from Western State University in Colorado. He became a beloved coach, high school math teacher, and principal for many years. He was the proud co-owner of M&M Ranch in Marshall, TX where he grew award-winning alfalfa hay and raised cattle, bees, and crawfish. Larry loved grilling, the outdoors, and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing with his children and grandchildren. As an adoring "Pops", he loved sharing his passion for ranch life with his grandchildren showing them all manner of ranch adventures. He was a loyal friend to many of his neighbors and could often be found sitting on the carport with a couple of friends.

  3. Larry is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Charles "Chesty" McCathran and Ronald "Red" McCathran. Those left to cherish his memory are his children and their spouses: Eric (Jill) McCathran, Ty (Amy) McCathran, Casey (José) Portillo, and Destin (Mark) Brannon. He also leaves behind his precious grandchildren: Zachary (Maggie) McCathran, Matthew (Madeline) McCathran, Jake McCathran, Grace McCathran, Mateo Portillo, Santiago Portillo, Nash Brannon, and Tucker Brannon, as well as numerous friends who were like family to him.

  4. The family has chosen to hold a private memorial on Caddo Lake. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Alzheimer's Association (https://act.alz.org/site/Donation) or the Caddo Lake Institute (https://caddolakeinstitute.org) in honor of Larry.
