Lela Irene Bumpas, a cherished matriarch and beacon of strength, passed away from natural causes on May 13, 2024, at the age of 97 years 8 months 9 days in Lufkin, Texas. Born on September 4, 1926, in Yale, Oklahoma, Lela's journey was marked by resilience, love, and an unwavering commitment to her family and community.
Lela and her family moved from Oklahoma to Raymondville, Missouri when she was about 2 years old. She grew up there going to Vollmer School. She is preceded in death by her parents, two sister, two bothers and two half bothers.
Lela's life was a testament to her indomitable spirit and her ability to adapt and thrive in the face of adversity. She was a proud graduate of the School of Hard Knocks, where she learned lessons that would guide her through many of life's challenges. Lela's work ethic and leadership skills shone brightly during her impressive 37-year tenure at AT&T. As a Senior Second Level Manager, she played a pivotal role in overseeing the initial implementation of groundbreaking telecommunications features such as Caller ID, Call Forwarding, and Call Waiting in an era when analog P.O.T.S. phone switches were the norm. Her retirement in 1991 marked the end of a remarkable career that left a lasting impact on the industry.
Beyond her professional achievements, Lela's passions and interests painted the canvas of her personal life with vibrant colors. From 1998 to 2006, she embraced the life of a snowbird, migrating from Michigan to Arizona with the seasons, a reflection of her love for travel and exploration. Lela's adventures took her to both foreign and domestic destinations, feeding her curious mind and soul. Her artistic side found joy in ceramics, where she created both big and small pieces that were as unique and beautiful as her personality.
Lela's family was the cornerstone of her existence. She was a devoted wife to her late husband, Robert Bumpas, and a loving mother to her daughter, Bonnie Bonin. Her legacy continued through her grandson, Walter Bonin, and she also shared her love and wisdom with her stepchildren, Rox Bumpas and Sharon Glaze, their children and grandchildren. Each family member was a cherished thread in the rich tapestry of her life, and they will carry forward the lessons and love she imparted.
As someone who faced life's challenges head-on, Lela often found solace in the words of Helen Keller: "Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all." This quote encapsulated her approach to life, as she never shied away from an opportunity to learn, grow, and experience all that the world had to offer.
Lela Irene Bumpas will be remembered not only for her accomplishments and adventures but also for her kind spirit, her tenacity, and her ability to inspire those around her. Her memory will live on as a guiding light for all who had the privilege of knowing her. As we bid farewell to Lela, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of passion, dedication, and an enduring love that touched many hearts. She leaves behind a legacy of courage and a reminder that every moment is an opportunity to make a lasting impact. Lela's presence will be deeply missed, yet her spirit will continue to soar in the hearts of those she loved.
