Roy Austine Eberlan was born December 14, 1936 in San Augustine County and went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 8, 2020. He obtained the age of 83 years. Roy graduated from San Augustine High School in 1955. After graduation, he went on to be a 2 sport athlete at Panola College. He played basketball and baseball and was named Athlete of the Year in his second year. Upon leaving Panola, he transferred to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, where he played baseball for the next 2 years while earning his Bachelor's degree in Business. After graduation he returned to San Augustine and taught at San Augustine High School for 1 year. Roy was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1961 and served on active duty in Korea for 2 years. After his tour he returned to the U.S. And served 4 years in the Army Reserves until 1967 when he received his Honorable Discharge from the military. During the time in the Army Reserves he taught & coached in San Augustine, Diboll, and Carlisle school districts. In 1968 he went to work for Halbert Farms where he was a service man, and Holly Farms as a service man and retired from Tyson Foods in 1999. He was very active in the community of San Augustine. He served on the Dixie Baseball Board of Directors and coached many teams. He was an assistant coach for the 1982 state championship team that represented San Augustine & Texas in the Dixie Youth Little League World Series. Roy was an active outdoorsman who loved to spend time with his family and friends. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of San Augustine. Those left to cherish his memory is his wife of 55 years, Jonan Barnett Eberlan, his sons Skipper Eberlan of Broaddus, Alan and wife Cheryl of San Augustine, Mickey and wife Davilyn of Woden, and Jeff and wife Cheryl of Kansas. 9 grandchildren, Cody, Matthew, Darian, Alex, Rickey, Ben, Hayden, Joah, and Madison & 10 great-grandchildren. Sister, Bessie Bryan of Lufkin. Brother Sammy Eberlan and wife Mary of San Augustine, and brother Rayford and wife Billie of Jasper, along with his loving dog Missy and a multitude of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Roy Clifton Eberlan and Claudia Florene Harvey Eberlan, and his brother Jimmie Lavon Eberlan. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be made to St. Jude's Hospital or Shriners Hospital for Children. His wishes were only to have a private family memorial for him. At a later date, his ashes will be laid to rest at Attoyac Cemetery.
